Meta

Meta began as Facebook, launched in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his Harvard roommates; the company took the name Meta Platforms in 2021. It is headquartered in Menlo Park, California.

Its apps - Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads - are used by more than three billion people every day. Reality Labs builds virtual and mixed reality (Meta Quest) and smart glasses, and Meta AI develops the open-weight Llama models.

Meta has released much of the tooling behind its products as open source, including React, React Native, PyTorch and GraphQL. Engineering teams work from offices across North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
