Sony

Sony was founded in Tokyo in May 1946 by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo; it became Sony Corporation in 1958 and Sony Group Corporation in 2021. It is listed on the Tokyo and New York stock exchanges, and Hiroki Totoki leads it as President and CEO.

The group calls itself a creative entertainment company with a foundation of technology. Its segments are Game & Network Services with PlayStation, Music, Pictures with Sony Pictures and Crunchyroll, Entertainment, Technology & Services with cameras, audio and professional products, and Imaging & Sensing Solutions, the world's market leader in image sensors. In 2025 it spun off its financial business as Sony Financial Group.

According to its corporate data, Sony had 112,300 employees at the end of March 2025. Research and engineering in Japan sit at the Tokyo headquarters, Sony City Osaki and the Atsugi, Shonan and Sendai technology centres; abroad, Sony Interactive Entertainment in San Mateo and the PlayStation Studios build the games platform. Sony AI and Sony Computer Science Laboratories work on machine learning, robotics and new interfaces.
