Square Enix Holdings states its founding date as September 22, 1975, the year Enix began. The group took its present form on April 1, 2003, when Square, started in 1983, merged with Enix. It later bought Taito in 2005 and Eidos in 2009. The holding company is headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and is listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange under code 9684.

It publishes and develops games and entertainment content, with the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts series as its best known franchises. The group works in four segments: Digital Entertainment, Amusement (under the TAITO brand), Publication and Merchandising. In 2022 it sold Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix Montreal to Embracer Group.

According to its corporate overview, the group had 4,290 employees on March 31, 2026, and net sales of 297.6 billion yen for the fiscal year ended that date. Besides Tokyo, it has subsidiaries in El Segundo, California, London, Beijing and Bangalore, plus group companies in Kobe.
