Wise was founded in 2011 in London by two Estonians, Kristo Käärmann and Taavet Hinrikus, as TransferWise, and renamed itself Wise in 2021. It is headquartered in London, and Tallinn is its largest office.
It builds infrastructure for moving and managing money across borders: the Wise Account for people, Wise Business, and Wise Platform, which lets banks and companies offer Wise transfers through its API. In 2018 it became the first non-bank to connect directly to the UK's Faster Payments scheme.
Wise is listed on Nasdaq and the London Stock Exchange and shares open-source code under its transferwise GitHub organisation.
