Company and team
At Lyft, our mission is to serve and connect. We do this by fostering a work environment where everyone finds their place and has the opportunity to thrive.
Lyft Urban Solutions provides the bike-share and scooter-share systems that enable millions of people to get around in more than 60 cities around the world. We built the first automated bike-share system in North America and remain at the forefront of the micromobility revolution. Our systems are present all over the world: from Citi Bike in New York to BIXI in Montreal, Divvy in Chicago, Capital Bikeshare in Washington D.C., and iconic systems in Austin, Barcelona, Bogota, Boston, Buenos Aires, Columbus, Detroit, Dubai, London, Madrid, Mexico City, Monaco, Pittsburgh, Portland, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco, Toronto and many other cities.
We are not simply technology suppliers: we operate these systems, developing the software, hardware and operations that allow urban micromobility to run at scale.
Ready to shape how millions of people move around their cities every day?
Lyft first started in San Francisco as a donation-based ridesharing network. Today, Lyft makes it easier for millions of people to get around every day in more than 200 cities. We are moving toward a world where on-demand transportation is a viable alternative to owning a vehicle, and we need visionary, insightful people to get there. Our team is known for building rich, creative features that set the standard for the ridesharing, bike-share and scooter-share industry. We constantly innovate and integrate cutting-edge technologies to improve life in communities.
Lyft's Hardware Manufacturing and Quality team is looking for a manufacturing test engineer to design, build and manage the test systems that ensure every bike and scooter leaving our production lines is safe, durable and functional. You will be responsible for the software, electrical and hardware test stations used on the production site, and you will be the person production turns to when something does not work, whether it is a faulty assembly or a test station that misbehaves.
Responsibilities
Test system management
- Design, build and manage the software, electrical and hardware test stations used during production
- Define the vision, strategy and architecture of current and future manufacturing test systems, and write the test specifications and station acceptance plans that govern quality
- Write scripts and programs to run automated tests and capture factory data for traceability and yield analysis
- Implement features and tools to support hardware testing across the entire product range
- Manage our internal test platform: a Python runtime environment based on OpenHTF, with YAML-driven configuration, product variants and feature flags
- Maintain the TypeScript/Electron/React operator application that communicates with the Python test agent via gRPC/protobuf
- Manage continuous integration, signed installers, semantic versioning and an S3-based automatic update pipeline with rollback
Hardware commissioning and validation
- Commission, validate and test the firmware of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA) and multi-component electrical systems, including motor controllers, battery management systems and vehicle control units
- Validate mechanical and electrical assemblies to confirm they meet safety, durability and functionality requirements before shipment
- Validate and troubleshoot factory tests, define factory test requirements, take part in software commissioning and review test station software
Production and field support
- Be the eyes and ears on the ground in a manufacturing environment, working with engineers to triage issues, carry out initial failure analysis and lead corrective actions
- Troubleshoot assembly failures on the production line and diagnose and fix test station bugs to keep the line running
- Travel to contract manufacturers as needed to ensure designs are built and tested successfully
Cross-functional leadership and supplier management
- Work across functions with contract manufacturers, supplier quality teams and program teams to quickly resolve manufacturing issues
- Maintain key relationships with manufacturing partner teams, internal and external test/lab resources, and mechanical, electrical and manufacturing engineers
- Manage external test station suppliers, including design reviews and factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT)
- Prepare design investigation summaries and concise, detailed test reports, and communicate across functions to deliver high-performing products to market
- Translate manufacturing requirements into terms that the company's security and IT teams can assess and support
- Lead large test engineering projects, from concept through production execution
Experience
- A degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, computer science or a related technical field
- Experience with Python, C/C++ or other scripting languages for test automation
- Good knowledge of hardware test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, custom test benches) and lab tools such as soldering and data acquisition
- Experience designing and building functional test benches and stations: instrument selection, DUT interfacing and wiring, PLC control and power sequencing, work on enclosures and panels, bill of materials (BOM) specification and sourcing
- Hands-on experience commissioning and debugging prototypes, functional verification and manufacturing support
- Experience designing embedded systems and communication protocols (CAN, USB, SPI, I2C, UART)
- Experience with ARM-based microcontrollers and RTOS environments, preferably the STM32 family. Experience programming and recovering firmware (e.g., ST-LINK/STM32, AVR/ISP, bootloaders)
- Strong troubleshooting instincts and comfort working directly on the production floor
Nice to have
- Experience with hardware test frameworks (e.g., OpenHTF, TypeScript, React, Electron, gRPC, protobuf and SQLite) or building test platforms from scratch
- Exposure to MES/ERP integration, including travelers, bills of materials (BOM) and label generation (ZPL/Zebra)
- Exposure to cloud data management (S3, Lambda/SQS) and building dashboards in Grafana or Mode
- Exposure to working with contract manufacturers (CM) and global ramp-ups
- Knowledge of test data pipelines, traceability or genealogy systems
- Knowledge of firmware debugging tools, serial consoles, JTAG/SWD adapters and bootloaders to support hardware validation
- Experience with Android or embedded Linux environments, including building, deploying and debugging
- Willingness to travel and work on site at manufacturing and assembly suppliers
Benefits
- Excellent health, dental and vision insurance coverage, as well as life insurance and disability benefits
- Mental health support program
- Fertility and family planning support
- Pet care benefit
- Health savings account (HSA)
- RRSP contribution options
- In addition to the statutory holidays observed in the province, salaried team members are covered by Lyft's flexible paid time off policy. The policy allows team members to take as much time as they need (with manager approval). Hourly team members receive 15 days of paid time off, with one additional day for each year of service
- Lyft is proud to support new parents with 18 weeks of paid leave, designed to complement government programs. Birth, adoptive and foster parents are all eligible
- Transportation benefit
