About
AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) was founded in 1969 in Silicon Valley and is headquartered in Santa Clara, California. It has designed its chips without owning a factory since 2009, when it spun its manufacturing off into GlobalFoundries, and it is listed on Nasdaq.
It designs processors and accelerators: Ryzen CPUs for PCs, EPYC server processors, Radeon graphics and Instinct GPUs for AI and supercomputing, programmed through the open-source ROCm software stack. With Xilinx, bought in 2022, it also makes FPGAs and adaptive SoCs such as Versal, and its chips power the PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
According to its annual report for 2025, AMD had about 31,000 employees on December 27, 2025. Its main engineering sites include Austin, Santa Clara, San Jose, Markham, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Shanghai, Beijing, Dublin and Cork, and the AI lab Silo AI in Helsinki.
