About
Anthropic was founded in January 2021 by a group of former OpenAI employees, among them siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, and is headquartered in San Francisco. It is a privately held public benefit corporation: its stated purpose is the responsible development and maintenance of advanced AI for the long-term benefit of humanity, and a Long-Term Benefit Trust has a say in its governance.
It builds the Claude family of AI models and the products around them, including Claude Code, Claude Cowork, the Claude Developer Platform and Claude in Chrome. In December 2025 it acquired the Bun JavaScript runtime. It also publishes research on AI safety and policy, and sets out how it handles the risks of more capable models in its Responsible Scaling Policy.
Anthropic does not publish a headcount; Wikipedia, citing the San Francisco Chronicle, gives about 2,500 employees in January 2026. Its careers page lists offices in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Boston, Washington, D.C., London, Dublin, Paris, Munich, Zurich, Madrid, Milan, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Bangalore and Sydney, plus roles in Canada and remote-friendly roles in the US.
