Block

Block was founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey, Jim McKelvey and Tristan O'Tierney as Square and took the name Block in December 2021. It is listed on the NYSE as XYZ. Since 2020 it has had no designated headquarters because of a distributed work model; its filed principal executive office is in Oakland, California.

It describes its mission as building technology for economic empowerment. Square gives sellers payments, software, hardware, lending and banking (more than 4.5 million sellers in 2025). Cash App is a consumer finance app with 59 million monthly transacting actives in the US in December 2025. Block also runs Afterpay, the TIDAL music streaming service, the Bitkey bitcoin wallet and Proto, which designs bitcoin mining systems and open-source firmware.

Its 2025 annual report counts 10,205 full-time employees worldwide on 31 December 2025, 2,472 of them outside the US. The same filing lists leased offices in New York, Oakland and St. Louis and says there are others.
