Bolt

Bolt was founded in Tallinn in 2013 by Markus Villig as Taxify, a taxi-hailing app, and took the name Bolt in 2019. Villig still leads the company as CEO; it is privately held and headquartered in Tallinn.

It runs a mobility super-app: ride-hailing, scooters and e-bikes, car sharing with Bolt Drive, food and grocery delivery, and Bolt Business for companies. Bolt operates in more than 50 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America, and in 2026 it announced autonomous mobility partnerships with Lucid, Pony.ai and Stellantis.

More than 4,000 people work at Bolt, and its main hubs are Tallinn, Berlin, Bucharest and Warsaw. Backend services are written mostly in TypeScript on Node.js, the apps in Kotlin, Swift and React Native, and data teams work in Python; Bolt publishes some of its open-source tooling on GitHub.
