About
Canonical was founded in 2004 by Mark Shuttleworth, who brought together a team of Debian developers to create Ubuntu. It is headquartered in London and privately owned.
Ubuntu has shipped a new release every six months since October 2004, with a long-term support release every two years. Canonical's work spans devices, desktops, servers and clouds, and its Ubuntu Pro subscription covers security and compliance for thousands of open-source packages.
An early pioneer of distributed work, Canonical has more than 1,300 colleagues in over 75 countries and very few office-based roles; teams meet in person a few times a year at global sprints. Most of what it builds is open source, mainly in Python, Go and C.
