About
Careem was founded in Dubai in 2012 by Mudassir Sheikha and Magnus Olsson, with Abdulla Elyas joining in 2013 as the third co-founder. Uber agreed to buy it for 3.1 billion US dollars, and the deal closed in early 2020. Careem later split its ride-hailing and everything-app businesses, and e& made a 400 million US dollar investment in the Careem Super App.
It builds an "everything app" for the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan: Rides and taxis, bikes and car rental, Food delivery and dine-out, Quik grocery and retail delivery, home services, and Careem Pay for payments and money transfer. Careem Plus is its membership programme. Its engineering blog covers Apache Kafka, MySQL and Amazon RDS on AWS.
According to its About page, Careem operates in over 70 cities across 10 countries and has hired over 12,000 colleagues over its first decade. It does not publish a current headcount. Its homepage mentions five tech sites across Europe and the MENAP region but does not name the cities.
