About
Cohere was founded in 2019 in Toronto by Aidan Gomez, Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang. Between 2021 and 2024 it completed four funding rounds, Series A through D, totalling nearly $1 billion. It is a private company.
It builds large language models and AI products for businesses. The model family includes Command for text generation, Embed and Rerank for search and retrieval, Parse for documents and Transcribe for speech recognition. On top of them sit North, an AI platform for workplace productivity launched in 2025, and Compass, for search and discovery. Models can run as dedicated inference in Model Vault or as private deployments on premises or in isolated VPCs. Its research arm is Cohere Labs.
Cohere does not publish a headcount; third-party estimates put it at roughly 700 to 800 people in 2026. Its careers page lists offices in Toronto, New York, London, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris and Seoul, and its about page adds Berlin, while saying employees can work from anywhere.
