About
Dropbox was founded in 2007 by Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi, who met at MIT, and went through Y Combinator that summer; Houston is still CEO. It is headquartered in San Francisco and has been listed on Nasdaq since 2018.
It began as file sync that simply worked across computers and now offers cloud storage, sharing and backup, DocSend, Dropbox Sign for e-signatures and Dash, AI search across a team's apps and content. According to its 2025 annual report, Dropbox had more than 700 million registered users, 18.08 million of them paying.
Dropbox works Virtual First, remote by default, with 2,113 full-time employees at the end of 2025 and offices in San Francisco, Seattle and Dublin. It moved most of its storage off AWS onto its own system, Magic Pocket, and is known for a large Python codebase, Go services and a sync engine rewritten in Rust.
