About

Duolingo was founded by Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker, two engineers who met at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. It is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and its Class A common stock is listed on Nasdaq.

It builds a mobile-first learning platform. The Duolingo app teaches languages, and has added Math, Music and Chess courses. Other products are Duolingo Max, a subscription with generative AI features, Duolingo ABC for young children, and the Duolingo English Test. A large part of its traffic and data runs on AWS and Google Cloud.

According to its annual report for 2025, Duolingo had more than 900 employees at the end of the year, including more than 430 engineers. Besides Pittsburgh, it leases offices in New York City, Seattle, Detroit, London, Berlin, Bangalore, Beijing and Tokyo.
