About
GitHub was founded in 2008 in San Francisco by Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, P. J. Hyett and Scott Chacon, after development began in October 2007. Microsoft announced in June 2018 that it would buy it for $7.5 billion, and the deal closed on 26 October 2018. It is headquartered in San Francisco and runs as a Microsoft subsidiary.
It builds the platform where most open-source and a large share of company code lives: Git hosting with pull requests and issues, GitHub Actions for CI/CD, GitHub Codespaces cloud development environments, GitHub Pages, GitHub Advanced Security and the GitHub Copilot AI coding assistant. On its own site it reports more than 225 million developers, over 4 million organisations and more than 800 million repositories, and says 90% of the Fortune 100 use it.
GitHub's careers site describes a remote-first company where staff work from a place that suits them. The latest figure found is 3,787 employees from a diversity report cited by Wikipedia in 2019; no current headcount is published on the pages checked. Wikipedia also lists offices in Japan (2015) and India (2020).
