About
GitLab began as an open-source project in 2011, when Dmitriy Zaporozhets and Valeriy Sizov started building it in Ukraine; Sid Sijbrandij joined to build the business, and GitLab Inc. was incorporated in 2014. It went through Y Combinator in 2015 and has been listed on Nasdaq since 2021.
Its product is a single DevSecOps platform: source control, CI/CD, security and AI agents, built on an open-core model. GitLab has shipped a new release every month for more than 170 months in a row, with contributions from thousands of community members.
GitLab is remote-only and has no headquarters: about 2,600 people work from some 60 countries. The company runs itself from a public handbook, and its engineers build GitLab with GitLab, mostly in Ruby on Rails, Go and Vue.
