About
Lyft was founded on 9 June 2012 as Zimride by Logan Green and John Zimmer, who launched the Lyft ride service that summer, and took the Lyft name in May 2013. It is headquartered in San Francisco, California, and has been listed on Nasdaq under the ticker LYFT since its March 2019 IPO. David Risher has been CEO since March 2023.
It runs a ride-hailing app with bikes and scooters in the United States and Canada, including the Citi Bike and Capital Bikeshare systems through Motivate, bought in 2018. In July 2025 it acquired the European taxi app Freenow for 175 million euros, and Europe is served through that app.
According to Wikipedia, Lyft had 3,913 employees in 2025. Its careers page says it has over 45 locations, without a full list; corporate offices are in San Francisco, Seattle, New York and Toronto, and Freenow roles are posted separately.
