Mercado Libre was founded in 1999 by Marcos Galperin, who started it while studying at Stanford and ran it from a garage in Buenos Aires. It is headquartered in Montevideo and in 2007 became the first Latin American tech company listed on Nasdaq.
It runs Latin America's largest e-commerce and fintech ecosystem: the Mercado Libre marketplace, Mercado Pago for payments, credit and investments, the Mercado Envíos logistics network and Mercado Ads.
Its largest teams are in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, with offices across most of the region, and its engineers build much of the platform in-house, including AI tools for development.
