About
MongoDB was founded in New York in 2007 as 10gen by Dwight Merriman, Eliot Horowitz and Kevin P. Ryan, who had worked together at DoubleClick. It open-sourced the MongoDB database in 2009, took the database's name in 2013 and has been listed on Nasdaq since 2017.
MongoDB is a document database that stores data as flexible JSON-like documents. Its cloud service Atlas runs it on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure with vector and full-text search built in, and Enterprise Advanced serves self-managed deployments.
According to its fiscal 2026 annual report, MongoDB had 5,636 employees, 2,927 of them outside the United States, with New York as its headquarters, Dublin as its international headquarters and its largest other offices in Palo Alto, Singapore, Gurugram and London. The database server is written in C++ and is source-available on GitHub under the SSPL, next to official drivers for more than a dozen languages.
