Notion

Notion is made by Notion Labs, Inc., founded in San Francisco in 2013 by Ivan Zhao and Simon Last; Zhao is CEO. After an early version failed to take off, the small team rebuilt the product from scratch in Kyoto, and Notion 2.0 launched in 2018 when the company still had fewer than ten employees.

Notion is a connected workspace of docs, wikis, databases and projects built from blocks, with Notion AI and agents across it, Notion Calendar and, since May 2026, a developer platform for running custom code and syncing outside data. The company said in 2024 that it had passed 100 million users.

Notion is private and based in San Francisco, with offices in New York, Dublin, Seoul, Tokyo, Hyderabad and Sydney. Its engineering blog describes a TypeScript and React application on sharded PostgreSQL, with a data lake built on Kafka, Apache Hudi and Spark.
