About

Postman began in 2012 in Bangalore as a side project of engineer Abhinav Asthana, an app for testing APIs that was free on the Chrome Web Store. It grew to about 500,000 users without marketing, and Asthana, Ankit Sobti and Abhijit Kane built a company around it. Postman moved its headquarters to San Francisco in 2017. It is privately held: it raised a $225 million Series D in August 2021 led by Insight Partners, at a reported valuation of $5.6 billion, with Coatue, Battery Ventures, BOND, CRV and Nexus Venture Partners among its investors.

It builds the Postman API Platform, where teams design, test, document, monitor and govern APIs. Named parts include Spec Hub, Flows, Agent Mode, API Catalog, the Postman CLI and the Postman MCP Server, and newman, its open-source command-line collection runner. According to its careers page, Postman powers API development for more than 40 million developers and 500,000 organizations.

Postman does not publish a headcount on its own pages; a July 2025 press release about its new San Francisco headquarters cited 828 employees, and Built In lists 850. It describes itself as a hybrid workplace with offices in San Francisco, Bangalore and Tokyo; Bangalore is where it started and where many of its engineering roles are posted.
