About
Rakuten was founded in 1997 in Tokyo by Hiroshi Mikitani, starting with the Rakuten Ichiba online marketplace. It is headquartered at Rakuten Crimson House in Futako-Tamagawa, Tokyo.
It has grown into an ecosystem of more than 70 businesses: e-commerce, a bank, cards and securities, digital content such as Rakuten Kobo, Viber and Rakuten TV, and Rakuten Mobile, which runs a fully virtualised, cloud-native Open RAN network.
Rakuten made English its official internal language in 2010, and its people come from more than 100 countries. Beyond Japan it has offices in San Mateo, Toronto, Singapore, Bengaluru, Taipei, Luxembourg, Paris and Barcelona.
