About

Red Hat was founded in 1993 by Bob Young and Marc Ewing and is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. IBM announced its purchase on 28 October 2018 for 34 billion US dollars, and the deal closed on 9 July 2019. Red Hat now operates as an independent subsidiary of IBM.

It sells enterprise open source software: Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the OpenShift application platform with OpenShift AI and OpenShift Virtualization, the Ansible Automation Platform, and Red Hat AI with its inference products. It also ships JBoss EAP, Satellite and Keycloak builds.

Red Hat's own pages do not state a headcount; Wikipedia gives about 19,000 employees, citing a source retrieved in 2022. Its largest engineering center is in Brno, Czech Republic, where about 1,500 people work, and its office list lists 86 offices across Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and North America.
