About
Riot Games was founded in September 2006 in Santa Monica, California, by Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill. Tencent invested $400 million for a 93% stake in 2011 and bought the remaining 7% in December 2015, so Riot is a privately held Tencent subsidiary. It is headquartered in Los Angeles.
It builds and publishes online games: League of Legends, VALORANT, Teamfight Tactics, League of Legends: Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, 2XKO and the physical-digital card game Riftbound. It also runs the esports leagues around its games.
Riot says it has over 4,500 Rioters (company website, 2026); Wikipedia cites more than 4,200 in 2024, after about 530 layoffs announced in January 2024. Its careers page lists 24 offices across North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Australia.
