Siemens was founded in 1847 in Berlin by Werner von Siemens, starting as a small workshop at Schoeneberger Strasse 19. Its international headquarters has been in central Munich since 2016, at Werner-von-Siemens-Strasse 1. Siemens AG is a publicly traded company and holds a majority stake in the separately listed Siemens Healthineers.

It builds technology for industry, infrastructure and transport. Digital Industries covers automation and digitalization for discrete and process industries, including industrial software; Smart Infrastructure connects energy systems, buildings and industries; Mobility supplies digital products and solutions for rail and road operators. In fiscal 2025 the group had revenue of 78.9 billion euros and net income of 10.4 billion euros.

According to the company, Siemens employed around 318,000 people worldwide on September 30, 2025 (continuing operations), about 85,000 of them in Germany. It lists development sites in Germany including Erlangen and Nuremberg, runs the global headquarters of its Digital Industries Software business in Plano, Texas, and does research at Siemens Technology in Princeton, New Jersey.
