About
Snowflake was founded in San Mateo, California in 2012 by Benoit Dageville, Thierry Cruanes and Marcin Żukowski, database engineers who set out to build a data warehouse for the cloud from scratch. It has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 2020, and its principal executive offices are in Menlo Park.
Its platform, which the company calls the AI Data Cloud, separates storage from compute and runs on AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Customers use it for data warehousing, data engineering, sharing data without copying it and building AI applications with Snowflake Cortex and Snowpark; Snowflake Postgres added a transactional database in 2026. According to its annual report for the fiscal year ended January 2026, it had 13,328 customers, 790 of them in the Forbes Global 2000.
Snowflake had 9,060 employees in 36 countries at the end of that fiscal year, and most of them work from offices. Its core engine is written in C++, with Java, Python and Go around it and FoundationDB holding the metadata; the company also backs the open Apache Iceberg table format and Streamlit, which it bought in 2022.
