About
Strava was founded in 2009 by Mark Gainey and Michael Horvath, who met on a university rowing team. It is a private company headquartered in San Francisco, and in March 2025 it moved into a new global headquarters at 181 Fremont Street. It bought the running app Runna and the cycling app Breakaway in 2025.
It builds the social network for athletes: activity tracking from phones and watches, segments and leaderboards, routes, maps, the Strava Metro data program for city planners, and a subscription with training and analysis tools. Its press site cites more than 150 million athletes in over 190 countries in 2025 and 195 million in 2026. The backend moved from a Rails monolith to services in Scala, Ruby and Go, and current job ads name Python, Kafka, AWS, Kubernetes and Snowflake.
Strava does not publish a headcount. Its job board lists roles in San Francisco, New York, London, Dublin and Denver, and its press release names Berlin, Paris and Sao Paulo among the places it is strengthening.
