About
Twilio was founded in 2008 by Jeff Lawson, Evan Cooke and John Wolthuis and launched its first voice API that year; Khozema Shipchandler has been CEO since 2024. It is headquartered in San Francisco and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 2016.
Its cloud platform gives developers APIs for messaging, voice, email, video and verification. The email service SendGrid and the customer data platform Segment joined through acquisitions in 2019 and 2020, and at the end of 2025 Twilio reported more than 402,000 active customer accounts.
Twilio works remote-first, with its headquarters in San Francisco, an international headquarters in Dublin and 5,587 employees at the end of 2025, about half of them outside the United States. Its services run on AWS, written mainly in Java, Python and Go, and it publishes helper libraries for most major languages on GitHub.
