About

Uber was founded in 2009 by Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick and is headquartered in San Francisco. It started as a way to order a black car from a phone.

Today it runs ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery (Uber Eats) and freight brokerage (Uber Freight) in dozens of countries - a real-time marketplace matching millions of riders, eaters, drivers and couriers every hour.

Uber has open-sourced much of what it built to run at that scale: the Jaeger tracing system, the H3 geospatial index, the Cadence workflow engine and Horovod for distributed deep learning. Its engineering hubs include San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Amsterdam, Aarhus, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
