About
Unity was founded in Copenhagen in 2004 by David Helgason, Nicholas Francis and Joachim Ante, who wanted to make game development accessible to more people; Unity 1.0 came out for the Mac in 2005. The company, Unity Software Inc., is headquartered in San Francisco and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 2020.
The Unity engine is used to build 2D and 3D games and interactive experiences for mobile, PC, consoles and XR, and real-time 3D in automotive, retail, manufacturing and other industries. Its Grow business, strengthened by the 2022 merger with ironSource, provides advertising and monetization tools such as Unity Ads and LevelPlay.
According to its 2025 annual report, Unity had 4,412 full-time employees in 25 offices across 16 countries, about 65% of them in technical roles and 77% outside the United States; its largest offices are in Tel Aviv and Montreal. The engine core is written in C++, developers script it in C#, and the company publishes hundreds of open-source repositories on GitHub.
