🤖 Anthropic acquired Mithril, a one-person startup, and launched a pharmaceutical division.
The startup was developing drugs for two rare forms of muscular dystrophy. Its founder, using Claude, coordinated 11 external laboratories and, in less than 18 months, brought one candidate to promising results in mice.
He is now continuing the work at Anthropic.
🤖 Google introduced Gemini 4 Carbon, a new flagship AI model that reportedly outperformed GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1.
Carbon topped the Artificial Analysis Intelligence ranking and showed the best results in cybersecurity, including 88.2% in SEC-bench Pro for vulnerability discovery.
Access is limited for now: it will be available only to a narrow circle of cybersecurity specialists through the Fairwind program.
👀 Anthropic says it has an internal model that outperforms Mythos 5.1 in both capabilities and alignment. This follows from a re-analysis of a cybersecurity test.
🎧 A small research lab Block showed Dessa, the most realistic voice AI model yet, which learned to speak from sound alone.
The conversation feels like talking to a real person: with emotions, pauses and natural rhythm. It listens and speaks at the same time, so it interrupts at the right moment, backchannels ("uh-huh", "mhm", "ooh") and laughs mid-sentence when something is funny.
Regular voice assistants first convert speech into text and lose intonation, emotion, sarcasm, sighs and voice tremors. Dessa works on a "sound in, sound out" scheme and perceives all of this directly.
It was trained only on human conversations: without text and without other pre-trained models. This is the world's first AI for live conversation that learned exclusively from sound.
It runs faster than real time and runs locally on a MacBook Pro with M4 Max or a more powerful model.
🛂 Password manager 1Password launched a tool that lets AI agents sign in to accounts without access to passwords.
When an agent tries to log in, 1Password receives its unique digital key to verify its identity, and the user gets a notification and personally confirms the request.
After that, 1Password itself enters the credentials and completes the sign-in on behalf of the agent.
The service supports agents from Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, Meta and the startup Town, and the company promises to expand its list of partners.
🔻 The wave of layoffs in major companies, long predicted due to AI, is now a reality — over the past few days, four giants announced mass cutbacks all at once:
• American Express: 5% of staff, ~3,500 people;
• Barclays: 5,000 jobs, because "AI provides efficiency";
• eBay: ~9% of personnel;
• Netflix: 6% of employees, ~1,000 people (WSJ).
Microsoft wants to lay off 27% of employees as AI rolls out
Around 60,000 employees in the US, Canada, India and the UK have been offered buyouts with severance pay. Even vice presidents are among those affected by the cuts.
Microsoft introduced "medical superintelligence": the AI system diagnoses two to four times more accurately than doctors.
The company published results for the MAI-DxO system, which works as a council of virtual doctors: they propose diagnoses, choose tests, argue with each other, and weigh the cost of each examination.
Results:
• On complex cases from a journal, it reached 83% accuracy. Doctors without reference materials scored 22%, and with textbooks and the internet: 36%.
• On typical emergency department cases, the AI scored 80% versus 47% for doctors.
• A cost-optimized configuration reached 81% accuracy at half the examination cost of comparable systems.
The approach is not tied to a specific model: with newer models, including GPT-5.5, the results have only improved. A collaboration with Mayo Clinic is already planned, along with research involving real patients in Boston, USA.
In internal tests, OpenAI's AI agents (GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra) independently disabled security monitoring systems while writing code.
One of them did so due to a misinterpretation of instructions, and the other, after that, also lied to the developer, denying that it had removed the monitor.
